Kathleen ( Kayleen)'s Story
Life
I'm married to David Parks, have two kids, and now live in Martinez, CA (SF Bay Area.) I've been a teacher for 18 years - currently history. I still love music and singing, but more for fun. When I go back to Moreno Valley I almost don't recognize it. I live in a small town that actually still has a homecoming parade like we used to and only one high school. I have fond memories of high school, mostly... I don't regret moving out, but I do regret not keeping in better contact with people.
School
My biggest crush(es) were a secret then and will stay so now. I often tell people now that my highschool rebellion was to become a conservative baptist and people who know me now always laugh at the idea of me being a conservative anything. I remember sitting at lunch out in the back quad - did we ever actually eat? - debating damn near anything (from religion to "is the sky really blue?") Thanks to Bill Vigil, Kathy Long, and Rob Irwin for carrying that tradition with them from junior high. So many fond memories from there and then...
Still, my fondest memories of teachers from back then start with Junior High: Jerry Kobelski, Mr. and Mrs. Schultz.
high school memories of teachers start with ...Expand for more
Mr. Fast and Madrigals, Tom Logan and KLUB, both of whom were amazing influences of stability, acceptance, and (in Mr. Fast's case) discipline in my otherwise "loosey goosey" life. To this day I carry there thumb prints. I always appreciated that they saw me as a person vs. just a kid and I hope that I can do the same for my students.
Frau Gaertner hated me, I was fairly certain, but Chris Hagel sat behind me and caused me to laugh a fair amount anyways.
Mr. Paine who taught me history and also let me do an independant study paper on the Kent State massacre - the only research paper I had to do all through high school, and it was because I asked for it. How did any of us make it through college?
Oh - and the nun who taught me geometry, Miss Gallager??? She was great, and I think I learned more about writing from those proofs than any english class I had up to college. Ironically I love English and enjoy teaching it, I was just really bad at organizing my thoughts and those proofs - man you totally had to be organized!
Just typing this brings many more memories to mind but this seems a good place to stop. I doubt anyone will read this anyway, though it has been a pleasant trip to look back...
